How to connect to the PostgreSQL database server

After installation of PostgreSQL database server, we have to connect to the database to create database, tables, stored procedures,…..etc. In PostgreSQL Server, we can connect to the database server either using SQL shell(psql) or pgAdmin Tool(Graphical User Interface).

Connect to the PostgreSQL database server using SQL Shell(psql) tool:

1. Launch the SQL shell(psql) as shown below. Goto: Start –> All Programs –> PostgreSQL 9.4 –> SQL Shell

2. Then it asks for server name, Database Name, Port number, Username and password. Provide the server name, Database Name, Port number, Username and password. Then, type

SELECT version();

to get the version of PostgreSQL.

Connect to the PostgreSQL database server using pgAdmin III(GUI) tool:

1. Open the pgAdmin tool from PostgreSQL folder which is there in All Programs.

2. Connect to the server right clicking on PostgreSQL and select Connect.

3. Provide password for Hostname(server) that we want to connect.

4. Then select the database, click on SQL to execute the SQL queries.
