Windows could not start the Terminal Services Gateway service on Local Computer

Cause:When we have received the above message when tried to start, we have to check the dependency services. Importantly check Network Policy Server service.

Resolution:

1) If it is in stopped state, then start the Network Policy Server service.
2) As per Microsoft the following ports are needed by Network Policy Server service: UDP:1812, UDP:1813, UDP:1645, UDP:1646.
Filter the ports by running following command
C:\users\administrator\ netstat – ano |findstr 1812
UDP 0.0.0.0:1812 *:* 1072
C:\users\administrator\ netstat – ano |findstr 1813
UDP 0.0.0.0:1813 *:* 1072

The process with ID(PID) was rt_daemon..exe third party application that has installed.

3)Open Taskmanager then goto services then check PID, PID tell us which service is using the port 1812/1813. Then, stop the relevant service.

4) Then we have successfully started the Network Policy server service and Terminal Services Gateway.

5) Still, you are unable to start the Terminal services Gateway service, then reboot the server.
